Drs. Merel Meijer
Biography
Merel Meijer is a PhD Candidate with an NWO teacher grant at NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies and the University of Amsterdam. Her research focuses on the nightlife in Amsterdam during the German occupation (1940-1945). In her research, she focuses both on the changes in nightlife compared to the 1930s, and on the social functions that going out during times of war can fulfil. Next to her research, Merel teaches history at the Barlaeus Gymnasium in Amsterdam.
Merel studied History and Classics (BA and MA) at the University of Amsterdam where she focused on the impact of classical antiquity during the Second World War. Since 2021, she has been working as a PhD student at the NIOD under the supervision of Prof. Frank van Vree.
