In support of the research project Babyn Yar in History and Memory and related projects in Holocaust Studies, the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies is seeking one or more Research Assistants (MA level).

The work primarily supports research by Senior Researcher Dr. Karel Berkhoff on the Holocaust in Kyiv (Kiev), Ukraine. In September 1941, for the very first time in history, a metropolitan city in Europe lost virtually all of its remaining Jewish inhabitants to premeditated murder. In and near the ravine called Babyn Yar (Babi Yar), more Jews were slaughtered in two days during World War II than in any other single German massacre. Thereafter, Nazi murder near the site continued. After the war, the Soviet authorities suppressed the memory.

Most of the activities consist of processing vivid and diverse data, mostly in German, English, Russian, and Ukrainian.

The researcher assistant(s) work(s) with preselected historical sources and studies. The data from there can be written or typed text passages, summaries, annotations, and/or tags. Many of these data have already been marked for further processing. In other cases, the research assistant(s) is/are entrusted to make the required selection, summary, annotation, and/or tag. The data must then be accurately placed into databases that have been designed for the project.

The work takes place at the NIOD institute.
