This edited volume pursues several analytical threads, including emphasizing the dichotomy between the memory of the repression and the entrenched culture of repression; identifying some of the more salient impediments to confronting the Stalinist past; drawing a complex picture that contrasts independent, creative initiatives in the field of history with the dominant narrative promoted by the state; and analyzing the geopolitics of historymaking in Putin’s Russia. It brings together leading Russian and international scholars, some of whom have been engaged in efforts to reckon with the Soviet past since Gorbcahev's perestroika, to reflect on the politics of history in today’s Russia.
