Research on the functioning of the municipal organisation of Amsterdam (1930-1950)
The decision was prompted by the discussion about the involvement of the municipal tram service in the deportation of Jews from Amsterdam, and the involvement of Amsterdam’s social services in the deployment of Jewish workers in labour camps. In order to understand the choices that were made at the time, it is important to view these municipal services’ policies in a wider context. After all, Amsterdam’s whole administrative apparatus had to deal with the repercussions of Nazification, disenfranchisement and persecution. The research, which was launched in September 2020, thus studies the dynamics of the city in conjunction with municipal policy in the period 1930-1950.
