Dr. Ewoud Kieft
Biography
Ewoud Kieft is a writer and historian, with seven books and hundreds of articles (in NRC, De Groene Amsterdammer and de Volkskrant, among others) to his name.
One theme recurs strikingly often in his work: radicalisation. Whether it was the war enthusiasts of 1914, or the Nazi sympathisers of the 1920s and 1930s, nineteenth-century converts, or the anti-system movement of the future. Kieft's books and articles revolve around people turning away from the established order and falling under the spell of a truth that tolerates no alternative. And each time, the question arises as to what you can do against that kind of radicalisation; what you can counter against it, and how an open society can defend itself against extremism.
